High level of indiscipline among Nigerian youths worrisome, says Rector

The rector of the Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, Prof. Mohammed Atureta, has decried what he described as the prevalence of various acts of indiscipline among Nigerian youths.

The rector of the Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, Prof. Mohammed Atureta, has decried what he described as the prevalence of various acts of indiscipline among Nigerian youths.

Atureta, a professor of mathematics, who pointed at the ugly trend during the matriculation ceremony performed for the 3,200 new National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) students of the school, lamented that cherished national virtues were being lost to myriads of social vices.

He said that the school, as a reformist institution, will do all within its powers to deliver on its responsibility of molding its students into future leaders.

He commended the efforts of the Visitor to the polytechnic, Governor Yahaya Bello, for his support to the institution, despite dwindling state resources, and for providing the secured environment for learning, through his zero tolerance agenda for insecurity.

“It is our responsibility to mold you as youths into future leaders. However, it is regrettable to state that the high incidence of indiscipline among Nigerian youths is worrisome.

“The great virtues of hard work, dedication to studies, honesty, integrity and morality have been lost to social vices like indecency, list for money, lukewarm attitude to studies and various shades of immortality.

“This polytechnic is a reformist institution where youths are prepared to face the challenges of life, such as unemployment after graduation.

“In this regard, I will implore each one of you to take advantage of our entrepreneurship programmes by picking up training in one vocation,” said the rector.

What we’ll do to parents who refuse to enrol children in school – FG

The Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, says Nigeria will soon effect a policy to prosecute parents who refused to enrol their children of school age in schools across the country.

Adamu made this known in Abuja on Monday while addressing newsmen during the 9th edition of the Weekend Ministerial briefing, NAN reports.

He said parents who sabotage efforts of the government in reducing the number of out-of-school children would soon be criminalised and would be made to face the wrath of the law.

“Unless the issue of parents who refused their children going to school is made a crime, and we start jailing parents, the menace of out of school children will not be resolved.

“There are many who are still working behind culture, religion.

“So the ministry is to effect this policy so that any parent whose child of school age refuses to take them to school will be jailed,’’ he said.

Speaking on matching grant and other intervention funds for basic education in Nigeria, the minister said a total of N350 billion had been expended on the sub-sector as against the N360 billion spent by the previous administration.

“In the six years preceding the Buhari Administration, between 2009 and 2014, the Federal Government spent about N360 billion worth of intervention on Basic Education covering textbooks, teacher professional development, construction of classrooms and library resources among others,” he said.

Adamu emphasised that corruption and lack of political will from state governments were among other reasons responsible for the collapse of basic education across the states.

“Having come to this painful conclusion, the Federal Government decided to deduct from source, part of the last tranche of the Paris Club refund from all the states that have not been able to access their monies from (UBEC).

“If this attitude of deliberate refusal on the part of states to provide counterpart funding for basic education continues, then the Federal Government will have no choice than to sustain its strategy of deducting counterpart funding of states percentage from source,’’ he said.

The death of a prominent Nigerian Professor, Pius Adesanmi, who died in the Ethiopian Airlines plane crash of Sunday, has continued to elicit grief in many Nigerians.

The columnist was among the 157 passengers and crew members killed in the crash on Sunday morning, which occurred shortly after the plane left Addis Ababa for Nairobi in Kenya.

The Nigerian-born Canadian, who before his death worked at the Institute of African Studies in Carleton University of Canada, was a columnist at PREMIUM TIMES as well as other Nigerian media outfits.

Another Nigerian, Abiodun Bashua, was also a victim of the disaster.

Before his demise, Mr Bashua was a UN expert who had extensive experience in several United Nations peacekeeping operations in Africa.

This paper reported how the airline management released the flight manifest showing the countries of origin of the 149 passengers on board, which included a Nigerian, 32 Kenyans, 18 Canadians, nine Ethiopians, eight Italians, eight Chinese, eight Americans, seven Britons, seven French citizens, one Egyptian, five Dutch citizens, and four each from India and Slovakia.

Tributes

On Sunday evening, public figures and many other personalities paid tributes to the late Professor.

President Muhammadu Buhari, in a statement issued by Garba Shehu, condoled with the families of the two Nigerians.

Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic party’s candidate in the 2019 Presidential election, said Mr Adesanmi will be remembered for how he brought scholarship to progressive advocacy.

“His numerous followers on the social media will miss his insightful contribution towards a better Nigeria. I pray his soul will forever Rest In Peace.”

The Special Assistant to the Vice-President on media and publicity, Laolu Akande, on Sunday evening mourned the demise of the scholar.

“We mourn, with his family & associates, one of our notable public intellectuals of the day, Pius Adesanmi, award-winning writer & Canada-based professor, who reportedly passed on in today’s unfortunate Ethiopian Airlines crash. What a painful loss! May his memory be blessed,p,” he tweeted.

Former presidential candidate, Remi Sonaiya, in a tweet also sent a condolence message to the families of the deceased.

“Just to come here and express condolences to the families of the victims of the #EthiopianAirlineCrash – not expecting to know anyone on it. Only to be confronted with the news that Prof. #PiusAdesanmi was on that flight!!! Pius, dear God! How so painful. #NigeriaMourns”
